The East Midlands area runs from Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire down through Leicestershire, Rutland and Northamptonshire to Lincolnshire. It is GSP group B, one of the four areas National Grid Electricity Distribution operates, and the one that adds the most during the evening peak.
Agile is a regional tariff. Every half-hour is priced from the same national wholesale auction, but the figure on your bill is that auction put through values specific to your distribution area. This page sets out the ones used for the East Midlands.
The 14p/kWh peak addition is the highest of any of the 14 areas.
At a wholesale price of 10p/kWh that gives 20.0p/kWh off-peak and 34.0p/kWh during the peak, before VAT and the levy discount.
The formula above stops two steps short of the rate on your bill, and those steps are the same in every region. VAT is applied, and a green-levy discount is subtracted.
Both are currently at temporary values. The UK government's relief on domestic electricity runs from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027 inclusive, and for the whole of that window the VAT multiplier is 1.0 rather than the standard 5%, and the green-levy discount is 3.34p/kWh rather than 3.5p/kWh. Outside the window the standard figures apply, and the two worked examples above are quoted before either step.
The same 10p/kWh wholesale price exports at 10.18p/kWh, or 16.45p/kWh during the peak.
Both formulas were last reviewed on .
Octopus Agile is priced per distribution area, so the same wholesale auction produces a different rate in each of Great Britain's 14 GSP groups. The letter in brackets is the region code the site uses in its URLs - /?region=L for South West England, for example. Each region also has a page of its own, listed below.
